Our congregation had its beginning in the late 1700's as part of the various preaching circuits of the area.
The present church building was constructed in the early 1900's to replace two Methodist churches, one in the East End of Bay Roberts and one in the West End. It is located at the foot of Flings Hill in Beachy Cove. The church was dedicated and opened on May 6, 1906. The presiding minister was Rev. Snowden and it was recorded that the collection for that service was $327.00.
The master builder was William T. Bowering. The 100 foot structure was built to accommodate 1000 people. The pews were built of highly polished red oak and the ceiling was designed in metal and arranged in three arches of deeply embossed sectional panelling. The church still has the Estey pipe organ which was purchased in the early 1920's.
There have been some exterior changes to the church over the years. The stately tower was removed in the 1940's with the remaining tower being completely removed in 1974. At that time, the brick front was added.
There was a fire at the church in March 1917 which closed the building for a while. Services were held at Victoria Hall.

The Christian Education Centre was built in the early 1960's with its official opening on May 15, 1962. The presiding minister was Rev. Berkley Reynolds. This building replaced the two Sunday School buildings; Front Hall in Bay Roberts East, and the Snowden Hall in the West. The Centre is used by the Sunday School, UCW and other groups of the church for Christian Fellowship, socials and fundraising. It has a gym that has been used by youth and adults for playing sports, Explorers, CGIT Tyro and Girl Guide Groups. An enclosed walkway between the church and the Centre was added in the 1980s.
Central United Church has had an active congregation in its history. There were many revival services, most notable was the "Garbett Revival" in the late 1920's. There were Sunday night prayer meetings after the 7:00 pm services. Also there were morning prayer services in the gallery of the church in the "Upper Room". Active groups within the church: Senior Mixed Choir, Male Choir, Men's Fellowship, and Sunday School. No less than eleven people have entered the ministry from Central United Church.
Central United Church is one of two points of the Bay Roberts Pastoral Charge of the United Church of Canada. It operates under a Board of Management and a Session made up of elders of the church.
